Wake Me Up When October Ends

Broken Halos
5

I pride myself on being a truth teller, so here it is…I don’t have it this week. October used to be one of my favorite months. The weather starts to change, cute clothes and fall decorations come out of storage, and the smells of pumpkin and chili bring comfort. It’s the start of the holiday season, with fun Halloween parties, costumes, and yummy treats. It’s the month of OU/texas, the state fair filled with fried foods and beer out of wax cups at 10 am, Austin City Limits, and the educator’s dream of fall break. With playoff baseball, midnight madness, and the NBA preseason, it’s one of the rare times of the year when every sport coincides1.

I've been working remotely in Halloween Land this week! Midlife Minimalist Hack Attempt: Find yourself a friend who decorates for holidays so you can enjoy the scenery without the effort! Bonus for casually incorporating your old decorations into theirs.

Then Tom Petty died. Then my dad died. Then my mom died. Now, I long to skip October. It’s a long, dark month for me, and it's not made any better by bad football. The thing about griefaversaries is that they never go away, so I’ll save my drafts for another week. Everything I write is a jumbled mess, and stringing coherent sentences together is at a minimum. All my brain capacity is reserved for class, homework, and my upcoming writing retreat2 next weekend. I’m taking a break with some pumpkin loaf and Netflix and chill for a few days. Enjoy my playlist and some festive pics.
